Testing Services

Body composition, VO2 Max, and resting metabolic rate (RMR) testing is available to the public and MSU community for a fee. Appointments are made with a lab technician based upon lab availability. Please contact us for additional information and scheduling.

All appointments require at least 48-hour advanced notice of attendance.

Bod Pod & Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Testing

The BOD POD Gold Standard Body Composition Tracking System is an air displacement plethysmograph which uses whole-body densitometry to determine body composition (body fat and fat-free mass) in adults and children, and can accommodate a wide range of populations. A full test requires only about 5 minutes, and provides highly accurate, safe, comfortable, and fast test results. Each BOD POD Gold Standard is a complete turnkey system with a dedicated computer system, the ability to measure thoracic gas volume (TGV), and data management capabilities. – COSMED: The Metabolic Company

The medical Body Composition Analyzer (mBCA) by seca breaks down weight into body compartments relevant to the practice of medicine, namely, Fat Mass and Fat-Free Mass, Body Water (made up of extracellular water and intracellular water) and Skeletal Muscle Mass. Measurements are processed by six analytical modules and presented in easy-to-understand graphics. seca has conducted validation studies that compare its measurement results with the scientific gold standard. – SECA

What to expect:

  • 30 minute appointment
  • BOD POD Analysis & Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis
  • Overview of results by NRL Staff
Cost: $35 – MSU Students, Faculty & Staff
$50 – Bozeman Community Members

VO2 Max Testing

VO2 max (maximal oxygen uptake) is the standard measure of cardiorespiratory fitness. NRL uses open-circuit spirometry to accurately measure VO2 max. Athletes can use testing info to determine training zones and the results of a training program.

What to expect:

  • 75 minute appointment
  • Graded exercise testing lasting 8-14 minutes (Excluding warm-up and cool down)
  • Can be completed on a treadmill or stationary bike
  • Participant uses mouthpiece to capture exhaled air
  • Results are available immediately after test is finished
  • Results include: VO2 max, HR zones, information on how to increase fitness based on training goals, substrate usage (carbohydrates, fat), and ventilatory threshold

All results and questions will be answered by staff.

Cost: $100
